James Castle was a deaf artist from rural Idaho who worked solely with found materials. The catalog I designed is divided into five chapters, according to the five types of artwork he created: soot, color, type studies, constructions, and bundles. I drew research primarily from the James Castle website, as well as the book and film from the Philadelphia Art Museum’s 2008 exhibit James Castle: A Retrospective. The backgrounds of the pages are off-white, to reflect the found envelopes Castle would work on. The cover material and inside-cover papers are found materials – an homage to Castle – and the binding is an accordion-fold.
