The Hummingbird’s Daughter is a novel by Luis Alberto Urrea about a young Mexican girl resurrected on the eve of Mexican civil war with the ability to heal. As rebels flock to her rural homestead, she receives a vision of the Lord’s dove in the form of an indigenous hummingbird. Taking a different approach than existing covers, I used a photograph of a hummingbird native to rural Mexico, blurred its wings and beak in Photoshop, then set it against a cool gray – a color I pulled from the hummingbird’s belly.
